Questions before you choose

How many hours a day should the light run?

For a tank without live plants, a few hours are enough for viewing, and more only feeds algae. With live plants the light needs a longer, fixed period every day. Consistency matters more than the exact number, and a plug-in timer solves half the problem.

Which light colour suits an aquarium?

White light leaning towards daylight shows fish colours naturally and is enough for display. If you keep live plants, colour alone is not enough; what matters is the light's strength and how much of the tank it covers. Blue light on its own is a look, not nutrition.

Does a stronger light mean better plants?

Not necessarily. Strong light without enough nutrients and carbon dioxide brings algae before it brings growth. Start with medium light and fixed hours, and increase only when the plants themselves show they need it.
