How do I pick the right heater wattage?

Wattage depends on the volume of water and the gap between room temperature and the temperature you want, not on the size of the heater. A cold room in winter needs more power than a warm room for the same tank. The heater guide has the table.

Do I need a heater in summer in Baghdad?

In summer the problem is usually reversed: the water gets warmer than it should and holds less oxygen. A heater in summer works as a stabiliser rather than a warmer. What matters more is watching the temperature on a separate thermometer and keeping the tank well aerated.

Why do I need a thermometer if the heater has a dial?

The heater's dial reads the water touching the heater itself, and it is not always accurate. A separate thermometer at the other end of the tank shows the temperature the fish actually live in, and it reveals a heater that is stuck on or has stopped.
