Questions before you choose

Does every tank need an air pump?

Not necessarily. If the filter visibly moves the water surface, oxygen enters from that movement alone. An air pump becomes necessary in a crowded tank, in summer when the water warms up, and to run a sponge filter.

How do I tell my fish are short of oxygen?

The clearest sign is fish rising to the surface and gasping, especially in the morning or after a hot day. This is not normal and needs quick action: move the surface, and lower the temperature if it is high.

What does a check valve do?

If the pump sits lower than the water surface and the power goes out, water flows back down the tubing into the pump, ruins it, and can drain part of the tank onto the floor. The valve is a small piece fitted on the tubing that prevents this completely, and power cuts here are not rare.
