Questions before you choose

What should I test in the water, and in what order?

Ammonia and nitrite first, because they are the silent killers and should read zero in a stable tank. Then nitrate, which builds up and is lowered by water changes, and then pH. The water testing guide explains what each reading means.

How often should I test the water?

In a new tank every two or three days until the readings settle. In a stable tank once a week is enough, with an extra test before adding new fish or after any treatment or major cleaning.

Does clear water mean healthy water?

No. Ammonia and nitrite are invisible, and water can be perfectly clear and still toxic. This is the cause of most losses in new tanks, and testing is the only way to know for sure.
