Questions before you choose

How do I know a filter suits my tank size?

A filter is rated by how much water it turns over per hour compared with the tank's volume, not by its physical size. A crowded tank, or one with messy eaters, needs a higher turnover than a tank of the same size with fewer fish. The filter guide walks through the calculation with numbers.

Is a sponge filter enough on its own?

For a small tank, a shrimp tank or a fry tank, usually yes: it filters biologically and gently, and it does not pull fry in. For a larger tank, or fish that eat a lot, it works better as a second filter than as the main one.

When should I replace filter media?

Biological media is not replaced unless it crumbles, because the beneficial bacteria live on it. What gets replaced on a schedule is the mechanical floss and the activated carbon, and each has its own lifespan depending on how heavily the tank is stocked.
