Questions before you choose

How often should I feed my fish?

Once or twice a day, an amount they finish in about two minutes. Food that is left over sinks to the bottom and breaks down into ammonia. One day without food a week does no harm to a healthy adult fish, and overfeeding does more damage than underfeeding.

Pellets or flakes?

It depends on where the fish eat: flakes float and suit surface feeders, while sinking pellets reach bottom fish such as corydoras. A mixed tank usually needs both so the food reaches everyone, and the pellet size has to match the fish's mouth.

Are brine shrimp and freeze-dried foods necessary?

Not daily, but they are useful as variety, to tempt fish that refuse dry food, and for fry in their first weeks. The staple stays a good dry food, and variety once or twice a week is enough for most tanks.
